So, I’ve been sick this last week, dealing with a sharp headache and nausea at first, and then moving on to a runny nose and phlemmy cough. The general achey and feveryness the whole way through didn’t help matters. I’m not sure whether the two stages were the same illness or not.
I treated the first of these symptoms by rest. Lots of rest. About 12 hours of sleep, two days in a row. It seemed to help, but when I arrived in school the next day, I was greeted with a drippy nose. No fun in a public school that has no money to buy kleenex. By the time I got off the bus, the cough had developed. I found a stash of Sucrets in the house, and proceeded to pop them in my mouth. I’ve had one going since yesterday morning.
Now look at the dosage information: “the usual dose is 1 lozenge slowly dissolved in the mouth. Doses may be repeated every 2 hours.” According to this, I’ve been radically overdosing on this stuff for 48 hours now. In the last 2 hours I’ve consumed over 12 individual lozenges. While I’ve experienced no “blurred vision, depression, dizziness, excitement, nervousness, tremors, slowed heartbeat, or low blood pressure.” as far as I know, I know this can’t be good for my body.
Even worse, the top hit for “Sucrets” on Google comes up with a lovely description of how to produce DXM from Sucrets. Yes, DXM: The drug suburban kids make from cough syrup when they can’t find anyone to by pot from. It’s a hallucinogin and has been compared to PCP and ketamine. DXM became well known when kids drink way to much cough syrup that contained both it and alcohol and ended up dying.
This scared the shit out of me.
Looking around, I learned that the particular type of Sucrets I was taking (The kind in a plastic box or tin, as opposed to those in a bag) did not contain DXM. This calmed me down, but this was a scary moment. I’ve stopped eating anymore of the lozenges, but I took way, way more than the recommended dose. I’ll stick to Hannah’s drug-free stuff from now on.
